    Dragon*Con 2010

    Big update on Dragon*Con:

A LOTS-sponsored consuite just got confirmed. It's basically a LOTS fan meet-up/get together/party and a tradition at D*C and other fantasy conventions throughout the United States.

The LOTS-sponsored party will be on Sunday, September 5th, from 2-4 pm.

D*C will provide ice cream, doughnuts and cake (yay for sugar high!). We'll need to provide some fan videos, posters, flyers, giveways would be nice (not mandatory).

Joe Campbell, the consuite director, will contact the local TV station that airs LOTS to come to the party.

Did I mention the consuite is free? No fundraising required!!! :-)

BTW, we did apply for a fan table, but unfortunately they were all taken. Apparently, this year, the space for the fan table is smaller. We're on a wait list.

    Other promotional opportunities for LOTS:

    • Distribute flyers & consuite party invitation at freebie tables
    • Distribute flyers & party invitation at Con Registration
    • Distribute flyers & party invitation at American SF Media track-room (pending track director approval)

And of course the big costume parade (photo op & video op). Please also refer to the Dragon*Con thread on The Seeker Cast forum.

p.s. We grabbed the last consuite available. Phew!

This is AMAZING news! Should we degin flyers? 'Cause I can totally do that, but sadly I can't attend... Oh, and can I suggest doing a small fundraiser (maybe like up to $200) to pay for some giveaways? Maybe DVDs, SOT books (perhaps signed by Terry??), etc?

I won't be able to attend, alas. But am happy to help contribute for flyers, giveaways, etc. Someone should ask Goodkind if he would donate an autographed something for the event.

This is really cool! Dumb question - where is it being held?

Not a dumb question at all.

Dragon*Con is held in Atlanta, GA in the US over Labor Day weekend. This year the convention runs from Sept 3rd to Sept 6th.

For more information about Dragon*Con I'd recommend reviewing this thread...

If you could design a flyer, it would be great.

I exchanged LOTS of emails with The Seeker Cast team about what to distribute. They're the D*C experts since they've been there many times. Ideally, we should have only a few items, so we don't overwhelm peeps. One generic LOTS flyer with show times, and may be the DVD review from DVDtalk.com.

Looked at the guest list and noticed no one from Legend of the Seeker, which isn't that odd, but what I did find odd was no appearance by Terry Goodkind. Many authors, especially fantasy authors, attend DragonCon. I'm surprised to see he's not on the list.

Guests for Dragon*Con are announced throughout the year so we're still very early in the process. With 30,000+ attendees this is a very large convention and there are often 400+ guests listed by the time the con takes place.

    Stay tuned.

I launched the Hercules/Xena and Tolkien/Middle-earth fan tracks for Dragon*Con. Their attendance is definitely well above 30,000.

To help build visibility for LOTS and SOT at Dragon*Con, anyone planning to attend the convention should contact the Tolkien Track director (Jean Baughman), Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature director (Sue Phillips), the American Sci-fi Media director (Kelley Harkins), and the Costuming director (Lee Cox) to ask for permission to:

    • Leave flyers in their programming track rooms
    • Sit on a panel that is relevant to Legend of the Seeker and/or Sword of Truth
    • Put up a Save Our Seeker poster in the room
    • Sponsor a contest or giveaway (we can discuss how to provide some prizes here)
    • Use their room if they have any open slots (it's important to each track that they use the room as much as possible during the convention)

I live near Seattle and won't be attending the convention this year but if anyone can get there and act as an ad-hoc on-site fan coordinator, we can put together a supplemental schedule if we can get these fan track directors to work with us. You MUST commit to being there and ensuring that communications happen and things are done.

If anyone asks for use of a fan programming track room and gets it, understand that director is putting A LOT of trust in your ability to get people into the room. Dragon*Con has staff members who are affectionately called "bean counters". They slip into the sessions and count attendance. Any track that doesn't draw a large enough audience over the course of the convention is in danger of losing its track status (that happened to Hercules/Xena after the fans spent too much time at parties and other panels even though they attended the convention in large numbers).

AND PLEASE REMEMBER: Anything you propose to these tracks MUST be relevant to THEIR programming. I suggest these tracks because there are relevant connections between their topics and either LOTS or SOT.

I agree but since the convention tends to use that number in any of their 'official' statements I just stuck with it so we don't get the local fire marshal involved. It was such a pain a couple of years ago when he shut down the Hyatt hotel and wouldn't let anyone else enter at one point on Saturday night because he said it was 'over capacity'! I'd never seen that at a hotel before.

I've been a regular Dragon*Con attendee for several years and I frequently speak on panels in the American Scifi Media, Whedon Universe and Podcasting tracks. Last year my podcast co-host Jenn and I were panelists with Craig Parker on the Legend of the Seeker panel that was held as part of the American Scifi Media track. I've already been in touch with Kelley H. to see how I can help with any Seeker panels she may have this year.

I'd be glad to help wherever I can.

LOL! I believe you. Even wearing a Director's badge, I was herded along with everyone else in the highly congested forum of the Hyatt each year, where the security guards stand in strategic spots and continue saying, "Move along, please; keep it moving".

Dragon*Con MUST be experienced to be understood.

BTW -- anyone who wants to do SOMETHING to promote the show should look at the Seeker Convention Circuit thread I just started. You can make a contribution by working with your local SF convention anywhere in the world.

As it stands now I will be going. I will be happy to hand out flyers or sit on a panel. I majored in English/Folklore (yeah that will get you a job) *grin* Can compare and contrast Modern Fantasy and the Hero's Journey...etc. Or how important and relevant "Fairytales" still are to childrens imagination and their notion of right and wrong, etc. All of which LOTS are great examples of.
