Learn how to tan leather..... But in reality have you considered high quality body paint
Well, I'm not quite that brave. Actually I already have the material for the suit itself. It's a nice-grade vinyl that looks leathery. It will probably be warmer than hell, but if it looks good I'm ok with that.![]()

well for the Agile (SP?), you could buy a 15inch umbrella, and put the glove that comes with it on, and then duck tape all around it, and then spray paint it with a burgundy color. that would give it the vibe that it is leather. i so wish there was a LotS convention (yes i'm that geeky) lol.
For the ageil, I would either try to get a cop style night stick at a costume store or use a wooden dowel (round the end by sanding) covered in red leather--or better, painted with red leather textured paint. You can buy most of what you need at craft stores. They may even have something you can use for the handle there, too if not, you could create the effect by using a wood turning and wood glue that you can get at a craft store as well.
I sew, so this really poses a nice challenge. I haven't seen any patterns for body stockings, but that would be a good choice to start with for the outfit if you can find one--otherwise, I know they have patterns for leggings and tight formed shirts--I have those--so you certainly could find a way to reproduce the look starting with those. Real leather is expensive, but the fabric stores sell good quality imitation. The right red may be hard to find.
i would say to hit up renaissance fairs for items or at least for inspirations. prices at ren fairs are a bit high. but that would be a good place to start. i would recommend you not duct tape and spray paint things, spray paint doesn't stick well to duct tape, i tried this one halloween for one of my costumes. as for the agiel... don't really have an idea, apart from what had been suggested by mudpie. go to a ren fair or find a site that sells those items to get a base idea for what you need and go from there.
*chomp *chompi wish this was animated
if you try to fail and succeed, what did you just do?
So noone has made the obvious joke yet about what she can use to make an agiel?..
What a big cheese dildo - oh that's just wrong (would have to be a hard Italian cheese)![]()
''pepper spray! that sounds delicious!...'' *spray* ''AHHH I WAS WRONG I WAS HORRIBLY WRONG!'' - Chowder
Grande Formaggio! I actually know this one as it's my nickname. Big Cheese.
Ann Summers forget 'The Rabbit' the next 'big push' should be THE GRANDE FORMAGGIO - sculpted by Italian cheese craftsman - all the dairy pleasure a woman could want (I keep thinking of Dairylea triangles for some reason).

Some great ideas folks! And some, well, interesting ones.I have a friend that wants to try to work a cattleprod into the agiel for the guys and gals who will want to take a "realistic" picture.
I'll try to get a pic of the fabric up for you guys to see.
As for the Agiel, I was thinking dowel or even chair or lamp piece painted (they have a lot of DIY stuff at Lowe's and Home Depot these days). Yes, I like the leather texture painting idea. And a gold chain shouldn't be hard to find.
I have found this pattern: http://www.venacavadesign.co.uk/Prod...t_Pattern.html (the middle one) but I'm trying to see if I can find something a bit more local. We have a new fabric store opening next weekend so I'm going to check them out. I even figure if I can find an old school Michelle Pfieffer Catwoman (Batman Returns) costume pattern that would be a great starting point.
Thanks for the continued input and keep 'em coming!!!

Hello Jen, I am also in the process of making a MordSith costume... I have a friend whose mom is a professional seamstress and she is going to be the one to make my design come to life. I am making mine from real leather (originally meant for furnishings so it's pretty thick and sturdy). I got it on sale from an online fabric closeout... here is the link if you're interested <http://www.theonlinefabricstore.com/product/10-CL-240> (there is only one hide left that is blood red)... and I can assure you that the color is a PERFECT dried blood red color (very sinister), and it's beautiful/amazing quality for the low price it is (a FULL hide [46-48 sq ft.] is usually around 400-600 dollars and this one is only 139$).
For my design I am making a mandarin style top where the bottom half is made like a corset. In the front it will have the illusion that it buttons up from neck, over the chest and down the stomach (off center to the right) with large, worn, brass colored buttons. The back will lace up from top to bottom. (only to close the top part, but to tighten the bottom corset section). Now because leather is so hot to wear I have made some alterations to the original style from the book... Instead of leather pants I will either find skinny jeans or leggings in red ...or black (the correct red is hard to find so I've considered just wearing black and then incorporating black lacing and small detail work). Furthermore, because the color is hard to match, I've decided to make gaiter type boot covers instead of trying to find boots in the same color. They will be lace up like the corset (from ankle to knee), and will then be skin tight, and they will slightly overlap a pair of plain black ankle boots. The front will have a flap that will cover the front of the foot and buckle in the space between the toe and heel to secure it. My forearms will have similar coverings. Again because leather is so hot, I've decided to leave my upper arms uncovered to help stay cool. No one wants heat stroke or have to drink water constantly; besides the cost of water bottles, you'll be in the bathroom the whole time instead of enjoying the conventions. I will have a leather thigh holster with loop to hold the Agiel and then an army type pocket below it to hold valuables (cell phone, money, ect). Last I will braid my own red leather belt from leather strips my friend will cut for me; just a simple craft project really.
and yes, there IS that much leather to work with, the hide is HUGE!!! if you can sew yourself, the cost would literally be the hide, some cheap packages of buttons, hole clasps, thread, needles, and some lacing string from Walmart... maybe a pair of cheap ankle boots if you don't already have some. (I got mine from Forever 21 and they were only 18$) so at most... it will cost 160-200$ (depending on quality of the other products) and if you wear it a lot, and in more than one year, it is worth it.... If I don't gain weight I'm wearing this for as long as It still holds up. =)
The Agiel will be a craft thing I'll do myself but I have yet to make the design for it... although I do know I want it to lace up the side. It will be the easiest part though so I'm not worried.
I'm not sure if my description is good enough to picture so I'll try to get a copy of my design pattern up online, but my friend has it at the moment.
I hope this gives you some new and innovative ideas... better than having to use paint on the boots, or latex body paint for the pants, which I saw someone say in another thread... YIKES that would suck to wear... worse than a full body leather jumpsuit and believe me THAT is reeeeaaaallllly bad @_@.

Brandy - some excellent ideas! Thank you for sharing. Please post some pics as your costume comes along. I'm jealous you've got a professional seamstress on your side!

Yeah, it is nice having a seamstress who is familiar with the fabric you want to use, for they can tell you what you can and can't do with it: you can then figure out the perfect design. Although, you get fashion criticism... difference of opinion type stuff. She says she doesn't like the way I look with tank top type sleeves... she wants to change it to a halter possibly... IDK what do you think? I feel it will make the outfit look too S&M and less like an armored uniform. Wait to answer that question though, I am going to try hooking my scanner up to post my drawings tonight so what I say makes more sense lol... OH and I made an agiel... though I'm going to make another in a different style I think just to see how it looks...I'll post pictures of that as well if I can.

OK... so I guess the halter doesn't look tooooo bad... but it still makes it look more cute'sy and less like I'm going to kick some a$$ lol I still want the tank type top though... Oh and I also put a pic of the color all the leather parts will be.

Awesome stuff! I can say we actually got a new pattern thanks to all the Mord Sith costumes on eBay as of late. A separate pants and jacket. Pants are cut and I believe getting sewn today. We'll begin work on the jacket soon. We are trying to stay as close to the original costume as possible. It will be hot, yes. But I'm a purist.Current purchases are looking to be a grommet gun to work on the lacing for the sides. I've also found a great ponytail for braiding, watching some boots on ebay and debating on gloves. Also, I've discovered that a toilet plunger handle makes a great start to an Agiel.
