View Full Version : TV Overmind suggests DvD sales may be the key

You gotta love this article:
It’s not necessarily a common practice, but there have been several cancelled shows to have been revived by DVD sales (the now-beloved Family Guy springs to mind). If The Legend of the Seeker is going to make a triumphant return to viewers’ screens, it’s going to need massive DVD sales to show how much fan support is really behind the series.
Read the full article here (http://www.tvovermind.com/abc/legend-of-the-seeker/dvd-fans-chance-save-legend-seeker/31721).
I think this is a great opportunity for LOTS fans to introduce their friends, relatives, neighbors, and strangers to Legend of the Seeker and encourage some sales at the same time. Just hold a viewing party, set up a computer with Internet access in the same room, and encourage people to buy the DvD/Blu-Ray sets from their favorite online retailers during the viewing party.
This can be done at conventions, schools, private parties, etc.
Whatcha think?

In any case, the show (which airs only in syndication) is still gathering fans, despite the fact that it was cancelled
This part angers me, but also gives me hope. I was angry that ABC didn't realize the Seeker was really just taking off, gaining fans every day. But hopefully that very thing will be what saves us. I look for a whole refreshed surge of letters once people who didn't know about the cancellation start searching their TVs for Seeker.

Family Guy and Futurama both got brought back due to sales in DVD's. Firefly got a feature Movie due to DVD sales, they did a national Buy Firefly DVD day or something like that. The sad fact is, I myself only became a fan of the show after it was canceled. I was only aware of the show in syndication once at 2:00 a.m. when I was flipping channels. However, now on Netflix I was totally blown away by the show! I still have some hopes.

What this does show is that we are having an impact. Like so many people have said "Seeker sells itself" all you have to do is introduce people to it and they fall in love. I just introduced one of my friends to it. She usually doesn't like fantasy but she fell completely in love with the show and now I'm lending her my copies of the books so she and her husband can read them. We can do this guys. We can win.
I'm loving this wave of Seeker energy that seems to be flowing as of recent. I feel like something big is coming!!!

I had to tell people they need to get at least 8 episodes into the first season to really "Love" the show. Most people I've gotten hooked on it thought it was "okay" at first, then I have them watch till at least the 8th episode and they really, really got into and love the show now. Personally, I liked the show right away, but thought it started great and then got a bit slow, then really picked up. I'm not even a Fantasy person. I mean I thought LOTR was okay, but I cant really think of a fantasy show aside from LOTS that I actually liked.

I couldn't agree more. We know the fan base is growing and an increase in DVD sales will surely grab the attention of the people that count. There are a number of easy things we can do to make a serious impact:
Fans in the US: please ask your local library to purchase the DVDs. Most libraries in the US have either a "suggest a purchase form," or a generic "contact form," or an email. If you prefer, you can donate a DVD set (check first if they accept DVD donations), but if the library can buy it, hey, it's your tax dollars at work ;) Some libraries don't accept DVD donations and the only way they'll add LotS to their catalog is if enough people request it.
Fans outside the US: you can check to see if your library takes donations or can purchase the DVDs, which are now available in Germany and will soon be available in France (Nov. 10th)
Order the DVDs on Amazon via saveourseeker.com (http://www.saveourseeker.com/store.html). A small percentage goes back to the SOS campaign and will allow us to buy iTunes episodes to introduce the show to new fans. Just an example of how we use referral money.
Gift the DVDs to anyone that loves fantasy shows and movies. LotS is a high production quality show, and like somebody else said, it really sells itself. I myself was hooked after watching one episode. The season 1 DVDs sell for about $22 at Barnes & Noble.
Ask your local video rental store to add LotS to their selection, and ask your general merchandisers (e.g. Target, Wal-mart, KMart, etc.) to carry LotS.
If you organize a fan table at a convention or faire, bring a laptop to play the show.
A great suggestion from The Seekercast team (during DragonCon panel): buy one DVD set for you, and and a second one you can lend to your friends.

I googled Legend of the Seeker last Thursday to see when the next season would start. I stumbled upon this site and I was shocked to hear that there wouldn't be one. I immediately picked up a copy of season one. I also worked an extra shift on Saturday so I can buy season two next week. Buying DVDs was the first thing I could think of that would support the shows return.

Thank you Paragon40 and welcome to the forum. You're on the right track. Also please visit the LJB thread (Legend Journey Book). It gives information on which networks we're writing to find a new home for seeker. Check out the thread. There's a lot of information. I also suggest you take some time to read through the renewal warwagon 2 thread. You'll be so caught up, you'll think you've been here for months. :)

I will. I intend on setting aside some time this weekend to introduce a couple friends to the show and help with the mailing campaigns.
I just wanted everyone here to know that more fans will see what you're doing here. I've only known of the show for 3 or 4 months and I love it. Everything you do including everything you post will make a difference. You're words and actions will inspire others such as myself to take part.
Welcome Paragon40 :-) We are fighting for months and it's really good to have people who bring new energy in!

Sweet new members. Yeah, welcome and feel free to check out all the ways you can help in the Save our Seeker movement.
Also anyone else recognize how in that link the pic of the DVD has just "Season 2" and not the word "final" like at the LotS official site? Hope in our goal perhaps? Well I can't wait until next week when we can get our hands on Season 2.

And the DVDs are the theme for the JBC "letters" during the week of September 27th - Stock the Shelves with LotS. Details at http://community.livejournal.com/legendofseeker/832216.html.
Please do contact your local library if you're based in the US, Canada, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and France (DVDs coming out on Nov. 10th).

Can someone in America let me know if it says the 'AND FINAL' on the box when the season 2 dvds arrive? I'm in the United Kingdom so it'll take longer to get mine. Regardless though, it's not anything we didn't know, but I'm very doubtful dvd sales will revive seeker under Disney-ABC.. but hopefully the sale of so many will look good to a potential buyer for the rights to SOT

We will know soon enough, a little over two days now. Take care of the box, it will be a collector's item some day, and people will laugh because it says "final season" so soon. When will the DVD be released in the U.K.?

I'm unsure about the proper (region 2) UK release (they are so slow getting the dvds to other parts of the world I swear..) but I've ordered the American release off Amazon, It's just that standard shipping will take a while so it probably won't reach me til November time

Another long time lurker here that has finally registered as a member! I have just bought the first two seasons on Amazon so I am eagerly awaiting their arrival. I still cant believe that a show of such high calibre has been cancelled without allowing it time for the fanbase to grow.
I was hooked on it since episode one, which I stumbled across accidently on Sci Fi UK. Why didnt Disney promote this show properly? I truly believe the ratings would easily have doubled if they had, given a decent timeslot on TV.

Yes, in a way, Disney has done us an unwitting favor. They've alerted all the fans to the fact that there won't be a third season (through ABC that is). Those two little words *and final* have reached far more people than we could have hoped to do in a months time. People who didn't know are upset and are now joining the fight.

Yes, an army that is waking up! There is a famous quote from World War II, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. I don't have the exact quote in front of me, so I will have to paraphrase. The Japanese military was reporting to their commanders about the success of the attack, but Admiral Yamamoto did not seem to be sharing their enthusiasm. When they asked him what was wrong, he said: I fear that all we have done today is to awaken a sleeping giant, and fill him with a terrible resolve. That is how I see this new phase of our campaign. For the most part the majority of the "Seeker" fandom was sleeping, because it did not know that anything was wrong. Now, however, we are like that "sleeping giant" that has been awakened, and Disney has filled us with an incredible resolve. ;)

This is great! However, I want to give all of us a word of caution. When we ask stores to stock the shelves with more LoTS, be sure to use the entire title: Legend of the Seeker - Season 2. Perhaps also include that it is distributed by Buena Vista Home Video. My local Walmart confused the requests for LoTS with a movie called "The Seeker". This movie has nothing to do with our series. It was made in 2007, and it is about a teenager that discovers he is a "Seeker", and must travel through time to collect six ancient signs to fight the powers of darkness. Walmart had a shelf full of this movie, thinking that this is what was requested. I showed them a copy of LoTS - Season 1 that they had in their store, and explained that we are requesting Season 2 of "this" series. So, we have to be specific and use the entire title, don't just ask for "Seeker". Ask for "Legend of the Seeker - Season 2", distributed by Buena Vista Home Video. The producers of this other "Seeker" movie are probably wondering why this sudden surge in their numbers?

Here is our solution: The Seeker Channel. Granted, there are only two seasons so far (44 episodes), but after they film a few more seasons, there will be enough material to keep this channel running non-stop, with only "Seeker", 24 hours a day. Untill then, I do like your idea of hacking into cable so everyone could see nothing but "Seeker" for a day. That would certainly make up for the lack of promotion on the part of Tribune.

Somehow we need to make sure, that the S2 dvd sales stay high for a relatively long time. It won’t be good if after the first wave the sales drop significantly. It would only show the TPTB that the hard-core fans bought the dvd as soon as it was released.

I agree. In some of the other threads people are saying that places like Best Buy is already sold out. Normally that would be good news, but it makes me a little nervous. I wonder, how many copies did they have for sale in the first place? When I went to Frys Electronics Store yesterday (a large retailer, very similar to Best Buy) they had three copies of Season 2, and one copy of Season 1. It would not be that hard for them to "sell out" with only three copies available. This is why our Journey Book Campaign is so important for this week, to write letters asking stores to stock their shelves with more "Seeker". And, anyone on our "gift list" either for a birthday, or early Christmas present, this would be something to get for them. And, there are library donations.

What the hell is wrong with Disney??!!
I think that they have been spelled, like the time when Shota cast a Spell of Forgetfullness on Zedd in the "Wizard" episode. :{ Do you remember this past summer when Disney replaced one of their top execs ( I do not remember his name at this moment) with Paul Lee? I remember reading that one of the reasons that they were unhappy with the former exec was that he was spending too much money. I think that Disney/ABC Domestic Television is going through some belt tightening. It's hard to imagine Disney ever having financial problems, but the television production is just one part of the Disney machine. I think that one of Paul Lee's challenges is to boost Disney's ratings, while cutting back on expenses. Unfortunately, they just do not seem to see the profit potential with "Seeker". We need to help them not to see it as a loss.

One way to achieve this is by making sure libraries purchase the DVDs. It may take multiple requests before they decide to add the DVDs to their catalogs. There are hundreds of thousands of libraries in the US alone that can help with DVD sales.

Yes, this is important. I went to several stores today, and Season 2 of "Seeker" was either sold out already, or it was not stocked there in the first place. Normally a "sell out" would be great news, but in this case I worry. Most of the places that had "Seeker" only had about three copies to begin with. It's not that hard to sell out three copies. If more stores do not start adding "Seeker" to their shelves, it will only be pre-ordered by the fans already familiar with it.

I really wish I could tell my libraries to stock Seeker (they don't even have S1) but they specifically ask NOT to request them to buy new items. They only allow interlibrary loans.
Ugh, frustrating.

Yes, I went to Best Buy today to check out how many copies they had left. They were sold out. I had them check the other stores in the valley, but only two had copies left. When I asked when they would be getting more in, they told me it was discontinued, but I could order it on-line. I said 'these came out on Tuesday, you're already sold out and you're not going to order more for the store?' I think maybe we should bombard Best Buy with emails for them to keep this product on their shelves. Remember, out of sight, out of mind.

Already!? Just a few on the shelf that got sold out and they aren't going to put any more out. Shesh! What is up with these stores and companies?! Yes we need to bombard Best Buy with those emails. Crazy companies.

Also I was checking Barnes & Noble and Lots S2 is ranked 29 out of 100 in their top DVD sales. :)

We'd be happy to donate a S1 and S2 DVD if they accept donations. Could you ask them?

I wanted to share a very cool idea that was floated via Twitter.
MCC2040 (http://twitter.com/mcc2040) suggested we could contact various Best Buy stores and others alike to see if they can play LotS on their TVs. It may help the store sell more DVDs and even TVs. LotS is shot is high definition, and with a beautiful cast and the New Zealand backdrop, the show really sells itself.
In return, we could offer the stores that show LotS some free Twitter and Facebook publicity love ;)

In the past, one of our Seekers went into her Best Buy store and changed all of their iPads to show LotS :) She did that herself. You can see a photo here (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=168646&id=100000812307088&op=1&subj=269657990457&view=all&aid=-1&oid=269657990457&comments&ref=mf). That's always an option too.
If any of you succeeds, please post pictures.

Agreed, "Seeker" would really help to show off those widescreen televisions in the store. As you said, it is filmed in High Definition, it has awesome New Zealand scenery, plenty of action and fight scenes, and a cast that is easy on the eyes. ;) All it took to draw me into "Seeker" was seeing a few minutes from Episode 6 in Season 1: "Elixir". I saw the first few minutes. It began with Richard practicing with the sword, and slicing pieces of fruit that Zedd has floating in the air. After practice, Richard goes to bathe in a nearby stream, and spies Kahlan already bathing there. Richard is busted, but before he can explain to Kahlan, someone steals their horses and rides away. Richard pursues the thief, but is knocked off of his own horse. Zedd is angry at first, and then he realizes that what Richard was distracted by is Kahlan. He knows that their attraction for each other is already growing. Anyhow, that is all that it took to cause me to want to see more. Yes, good idea. It would be great to have "Seeker" playing on multiple television screens in a store. This is where it would also help to have available copies of "Seeker" on DVD, because after the customer buys a new television, they will also want the movie that was playing on it. :>

Season 2 DVD still doing great on amazon.com:
Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #67 in Movies & TV (See Top 100 in Movies & TV)
#13 in Movies & TV > Drama > Television
#12 in Movies & TV > Boxed Sets > Drama
#18 in Movies & TV > Boxed Sets > Television
Please ask your library to purchase the S2 DVDs. You can refer to this post (http://community.livejournal.com/legendofseeker/832216.html) if you need ideas about what to say to your library.

Good idea on the showing it in stores. Unfortunately since Seeker is only on DVD, the HD shot part of the idea is pretty much useless since it will look crappy compared to a bluray on a big 1080p TV set.

Legend of the Seeker, Season 2 DVDs promo: $18 at Walmart, http://bit.ly/aEp3Vq

While shopping recently I stopped by the video section in two stores to see how Season 2 is doing. Walmart had two copies of Season 2, Target did not have any. Later on I checked their websites, and you can order both seasons from Walmart, and at decent prices too. Target, on the other hand......season 1 was available, but for season 2 it simply said "out of stock". And, there was no indication as to when, if at all, season 2 would be available. Clicking on season 2 did nothing. At least Amazon will say something like "more copies on the way", or "click here to be notified when more copies are available", but there was nothing like that on Target's page. Being as we are approaching the Christmas shopping season, I hope that they have not given up on selling season 2. And, Amazon continues to offer both seasons, no problem.

When I tried at Amazon, I couldn't order more than 3 copies of season 2 at one time. I actually am hoping this is a good sign...but I don't really know.

Yeah. Amazon has imposed the 3-copy limit since it started to sell the DVDs on Sept. 28th. Walmart lets you order more copies (I ordered up to 4 so far for the libraries), but I noticed you can order only once with your account. It is still the best deal with $18 for the Season 2 DVD set and 97 cents for shipping. Even with sales taxes, it's never more than $21. I just can't find anywhere the end date of this promo. http://bit.ly/aEp3Vq

I don't know if someone has already said this, but the second season is currently on sale for $19.99 at Target stores until through 11/10. If you were planning on buying it for yourself or for a gift, now would be the time. It would help boost sales of the DVD.

I just checked the sales rankings for seasons 1 & 2 of LoTs on Amazon, and season 1 is actually doing better right now! This is most likely because of the great sale price: $15.49. Season 2 is selling for $35.99.
Legend of the Seeker - Season 1
#834 in Movies & Television
#91 in Movies & TV > Boxed Sets > Drama
Legend of the Seeker - Season 2

This is a great price for Season 1, how about some Christmas presents for your friends? And, if we go through sos.com we benefit our cause as well. Let's continue to grow the number of LoTS fans. :>
